THE GREAT LAKES TARN CHALLENGE |
A really good walk with Katherine to do some of the Eastern tarns in the book. Sadly though, they all seemed to have been privatised into either fishing spots, private tarns or slurry dumps for local farms. Ghyll Head Reservoir, now a fishing spot... Rosthwaite Farm Tarn, now owned by the farmer - you can't see it, but there was a big fence around it. Katherine found a big chair, does anyone know what it's for? Stonehills Tarn, now behind a wall and part of a Private Estate. Knipe Tarn, now behind closed gates (unless you stand by the sensor by the gates!)

A big night, ticking off Tarns with Stuart, we started with Moss Eccles Tarn (above), followed by Scale Head Tarn, Wise Een Tarn, High Moss Tarn, Brownstone Tarn before finally coming by Scales Ivy Tarn. Moss Eccles, Scale Head & Wise Een were a great swim but unfortunately Scales Ivy was full of fertiliser so I kindly declined the somewhat boggy and polluted puddle. Bit of a shame but still, another load done! Before getting in Wise Een Tarn (Above) Scale Head Tarn (above) Brownstone Tarn (above) A very dirty Scales Ivy Tarn
A nice day for School Knott Tarn unfortunately Cleabarrow and Borwick Fold Tarn have now become privatised so couldn't be swam. :-(
Great day out with Stuart, Jess & Katherine doing four tarns. Unfortunately Ghyll Pool has become a reservoir which meant it couldn't be swam, but still managed to do Potters Tarn, Gurnal Dubs and Low Taggleshaw. still very cold but we got our first sponsor, thank you to the kind family at Gurnal Dubs! Four more down for me, 1/4 of a tarn down for Stuart!
A big thank you to John and Anne for sending me a copy of the lake District tarns East, very useful!

Pretty chilly though, snow still on top of Scafell Pike. (Styhead Pictured above, Sprinkling below)
Low cloud up near Grisedale Tarn, done after walking up and meeting Dave and Lauren who camped the night here. The first Tarn with the new wetsuit, very warm!

I've decided to dedicate a challenge I set myself back in 2014 to my Grandfather, Brian, who sadly passed away, soon after being diagnosed with MND earlier this year. He lived in and loved the Lake District and was an adventurous soul who achieved so much in his life. I'm hoping to better support those with MND and their families through the Motor Neurone Disease Association. If you would like to sponsor me please follow the link below:
